Laboratory for
plant protection

The Laboratory for serology and molecular diagnostics of plant diseases, pests and weeds is part of the Plant protection department.

The laboratory has existed since the department was founded, and since August 2023, as part of the EU project for Renewing the capacities of the Gene Bank, through the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Water Economy, has been updated and expanded with a new line of equipment for serological and molecular detection.

Regarding equipment, the laboratory is equipped with: ELISA Reader, ELISA Washer, PCR, Real-Time PCR, homogeniser, vortex mixer, centrifuge, magnetic mixer, thermostat, stereomicroscope, analytical scale, horizontal electrophoresis, gel imaging camera, microwave, digestor and fridge with freezer.

As a unit of the Plant protection department, it is involved in conducting the scientific-research and applicative activities of the department. In the laboratory the following activities are performed:

  • Identification of pests, diseases and weeds in plants
  • Serological detection of plant viruses
  • Molecular detection of plant viruses and virus-like organisms

The laboratory also actively collaborates with other departments within the Institute and is involved in interinstitutional collaboration. It is actively engaged in the work regarding the maintenance of the seed collections in the Gene Bank.
