Department of Viticulture

Scientific-research activity

The Department of Viticulture works on a constant introduction and collection of autochthonous, regional and international vine varieties and studies their agrobiological and technological properties in various wine regions in order to improve the assortment in the country.

Over the last few years, the department has dedicated special attention to local and autochthonous varieties. It is also working on selection and hybridization of existing material in order to use genetic resources as the basis for obtaining clones and new varieties of vine varieties.

Educational activity

The staff at the Department of Viticulture teaches the study programme Oenology and Organic and biodynamic plant production at the second cycle of studies.

Applicative activity

The Department of Viticulture develops applicative projects based on contractual-professional services with institutions or individual agricultural producers for raising new and maintaining established vineyards, offering expert advice and assistance with implementing new modern technologies in the production of wine and table grapes, and preparing opinions and reports of expertise.

Under the authority of the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Water Economy (Official Gazette of RM No. 39/2006), the Department of Viticulture carries out expert control of the production of vine planting material by officially registered suppliers. It also establishes the origin and quality of grapes intended for export and issues the necessary documentation.

Major projects over the last five years

2018–2019 – Impact of ampelotechnical measures on the quality of grapes and wine of the Vranec variety. Scientific-research project financed by Ss. Cyril and Methodius University in Skopje.

2019–2020 – Examination of germination in samples of different types of agricultural crops from a gene bank after a certain period of long-term conservation. Ss. Cyril and Methodius University in Skopje.

2019 – 2021 – Inventory and measures to reduce greenhouse gas emissions within the Third Biennial Report on the agriculture and forestry sector (UNDP- Skopje).

2020 – Enhancing quality and quantity of Vitis genetic resources in AEGIS – ECPGR.

2020–2021 – Antioxidant activity of fruits of autochtonous varieties and populations of fruits, vegetables and grapes. Scientific research project financed by Ss. Cyril and Methodious University in Skopje.

2020 – 2021 – Enhancing quality and quantity of Vitis genetic resources in AEGIS (AEG-VIT-IS) – ECPGR.

2021 - Improving the quality of strong alcoholic beverages by introducing advanced distillation technology. Challenge for student innovators financed by Gazi Baba Municipality.

2021 – EIT Food Start-Up Awareness Event, financed by EIT Food, European Institute of Innovation and Technology supported by the European Union, Forum for climate change adaptation and start-up opportunities.

2021–2022 – Copper content in vineyards in the Tikvesh Region, Ss. Cyril and Methodius University in Skopje.

2022 – Revitalization and commercialization of the wine variety ‘stanushina’. Scientific-research project financed by the Institute of Agriculture – Skopje.

2022–2023 – Research on the socio-economic status of the rural youth in Macedonia. Financed by Ss. Cyril and Methodius University in Skopje, Institute of Agriculture.

2021–2022 – International Project, Digital agricultural multilingual platform and mobile application FIELLDTEQ, development and implementation of MODULE VI – FIELLDTEQ AgriDay", Company 8 TEK, SMLLC Skopje. Project innovation of The Fund for Innovation and Technology Development, Skopje.
