Department of Fruit Growing

Scientific-research activity

The research work is mainly focused on advancement and area zoning of fruit production in the Republic of Macedonia. Research projects address topics in the field of pomology, introduction and selection of varieties and rootstocks of fruit species, application of new technologies in the production and reproduction of fruit crops, study on genetic resources and conservation of biodiversity, study on the impact of climate change, etc.

Educational activity

The staff at the Department of Fruit Growing teaches the study programme Organic and biodynamic plant production at the second cycle of studies.

Applicative activity

The Department of Fruit Growing develops applicative projects, topics and programs based on professional and technical collaboration with institutions or individual agricultural producers for establishing new plantations, maintaining plantations through implementation of appropriate production technology, programs for the establishment of nurseries and the production of fruit propagating material, expert advice on the traceability of nursery production, expert advice and assistance in the implementation of global-gap standards in plant production, as well as preparing reports of expertise.

The staff carries out expert control of the production of propagation material and planting material from fruit crops in officially registered suppliers in the country in accordance with the Law on seeds and seedlings of agricultural plants of the Republic of North Macedonia and under the authority of the Institute of Agriculture by the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Water Economy.

Major projects over the last five years

2018 – Characterization of autochtonous varieties of pomegranate in the Republic of North Macedonia, UKIM.

2018–2020 – EPS Innovative Development-Research Technology System (Technology for Research and Development of New Products of Expanded Polystyrene with Unlimited Appearance and Shape). Financed by The Fund for Innovation and Technology Development of the Republic of North Macedonia.

2019 – Country Programme Strategy for Global Environment Facility Small Grants Programme (GEF SGP) for Operational Phase 7- GEF UNDP.

2019 – Examination of germination in samples of different types of agricultural crops from a gene bank after a certain period of long-term conservation. Ss. Cyril and Methodius University in Skopje.

2020 – 2021 – Creating enabling environments for enhanced climate resilience in agriculture- FAO project ref. TCP/RER/3802.

2021 – Antioxidant activity of fruits of autochtonous varieties and populations of fruit, vegetables and grapes, UKIM.

2021 – Determination of the cost of production (gross margin level) of ten strategically important agricultural products- FAO project.

2021 – Forum for climate change adaptation and start-up opportunities” and the interactive training titled as „Green Start-up Forum”- EIT Food Start-Up Awareness Event.

2022 – Training of implementation of Precise fruit production-EIT Food Start-Up Awareness Event.

2022 – 2023 – Genetic potential of Balkan’s autochthonous cherry genotypes for temperature-adaptable reproductive behavior and nutraceutical value. Fund for science of the Republic of Serbia.

2023 – Research on the socio-economic status of the rural youth in Macedonia. Financed by Ss. Cyril and Methodius University in Skopje.

2023 – Call#06/2022 Expert engagement for preparation of Manuel for improved production and quality of apple – UNDP and Macedonian association of agricultural cooperatives.
