Department of Agribusiness, Economy and Rural Development

The scientific-research, applicative and educational activities at the Department of Agribusiness, Economy and Rural Development are directed towards improvement of the socio-economic status of the agricultural-food sector and development of rural environments by applying scientific methodologies, principles and solutions.

To improve the functioning of agricultural holdings, which are under great pressure due to globalization, fierce competition on the global market and the food security crisis, but also the influence of natural conditions and climate change, the department conducts research and analyses on the economic justification of sustainable agricultural practices, introduction of innovation and digitalization, economic rationalization and investment process optimization, risk analysis, climate change impact on agriculture and adaptation measures, socio-economic status of rural communities and other activities in line with the sector’s needs and demands of the participants in the agricultural-food production and distribution chain.

The applicative activities are implemented through projects, programs, plans, strategies and methodologies with wide application in the public, private and civic sectors in the form of: business plans, feasibility studies, cost-benefit analyses, marketing and market research, strategic plans, development of economic impact monitoring and assessment systems.

The new trends related to environmental protection, adaptation and response to climate change, as well as global market trends, contribute to new demands regarding the use of natural resources (soil, water), the introduction of renewable energy sources and other aspects, which further present a challenge to the agricultural-food sector and changes in production, organizational and operational practices in the sector.

The department monitors these trends and undertakes activities for efficient management of available resources, expanding the portfolio of rural communities, promoting diversification of rural economies and the development of non-agricultural activities by evaluating the natural advantages and traditional look of rural communities (traditional food, rural tourism, craftsmanship, etc.).

The department provides professional services for setting up and developing rural businesses and sustainability assessment of investments for IPARD (Instrument for Pre-Accession Assistance for Rural Development) applicants, balanced and smart growth services with special focus on the impact of climate change on social dimensions and inclusion, as well as services for financial management.

In addition, in order to stay up to date with the dynamic growth of the sector, the department actively participates in non-formal and lifelong learning in the agricultural-food sector through programs for increasing awareness and capacities, informing, educating and building of human capacities with the aim of acquiring new skills and knowledge indispensable for successful management of agricultural holdings.
