Department of Vegetable Crops

Scientific-research activity

The research work at the Department of Vegetable Crops is focused on improving the vegetable sector. Research is mainly aimed at increasing production resilience to climate change as well as the application of modern technologies in production of vegetable seedlings. Most of the activities are aimed at collecting, preserving, regenerating and characterizing plant genetic resources from vegetable crops as part of the Gene Bank at the Institute of Agriculture – Skopje.

Applicative activity

In terms of professional-applicative activity, the department is authorized to professionally control production of seed and seedling material from vegetable and ornamental crops. On the basis of business-technical collaboration agreements, it offers its services to institutions or individual agricultural holdings in the form of expert advice and opinion, assistance with implementation of modern technologies, etc.

Capacity and resources

The Department of Vegetable Crops has at its disposal an experimental greenhouse with an area of 100 m2 in Skopje, and land for demonstrative experiments in Kochani.

Over the last few years, the Department of Vegetable Crops has taken part in the realization of several international and national projects.

2023 – Determining the health status of 10 local varieties of embroidered peppers from the Gene bank, regeneration of seed material and evaluation of yield components. Financed by UKIM, Institute of Agriculture.

2023 – GIZ GmbH – Promotion of Economic Diversification in Rural Areas of South Eastern Europe (SEDRA II) in SEE- Evidence Based Policy development. Regional Rural Development Standing Working Group in South Eastern Europe – SWG.

2023 – Research on the socio-economic status of the rural youth in Macedonia. Financed by Ss. Cyril and Methodius University in Skopje.

2021–2023 – Correlation between macro and micro elements in the soil system – plant. Financed by the Ministry of Education and Science.

2022 – Horizon 2020 – Accelerating circular bio-based solutions integration in European rural areas – Biorural.

2021 – 2022 – European Institute of Innovation & Technology (EIT) – Food Start-up Awareness and Business planning.

2021 – 2022 – Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations – Creating enabling environments for enhanced climate resilience in agriculture.

2021–2022 – Digital Agriculture Centre. Financed by The Fund for Innovation and Technology Development of the R. North Macedonia, implemented by AgFutura Technologies Skopje.

2019 – 2021 – We Effect – From Disability to Food Ability.

2019–2020 – Examination of germination in samples of different types of agricultural crops from a gene bank after a certain period of long-term conservation. Financed by Ss. Cyril and Methodius University in Skopje.

2019 – GEF – Country Programme Strategy for Global Environment Facility Small Grants Programme (GEF SGP) for OP7.

2018–2020 – EPS Innovative Development-Research Technology System (Technology for Research and Development of New Products of Expanded Polystyrene with Unlimited Appearance and Shape). Financed by The Fund for Innovation and Technology Development of the R. North Macedonia, implemented by Usjepor SMLLC Skopje and UKIM Institute of Agriculture Skopje.
