The Institute of Agriculture - Skopje and the Embassy of the Republic of Slovenia in cooperation with the Municipality of Gazi Baba and FAO (Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations) marked the World bee day. The event, which took place at the Institute of Agriculture - Skopje, aimed to raise children's awareness of the vital role of bees in sustainable food production, nature conservation and preservation of life on Earth, and bring them closer to nature and love for the natural sciences. This is of particular importance, as bees are under great threat from a number of factors, such as climate change, intensive agriculture and the use of pesticides, loss of biodiversity and pollution.
At the event, beekeeper Dragana Jovanovska and entomologist Dr. Katerina Bandjo Oreshkovic talked to children from primary schools in the Gazi Baba Municipality about the importance of bees and other pollinators for humanity, food security and the global elimination of hunger, as well as care for the environment and biodiversity.
The students expressed their artistic creativity on this topic by painting bee boxes, which will be placed in the apiary of the Institute of Agriculture with the Slovenian ‘AJ’ boxes, a gift from the Republic of Slovenia. Also, the children together with the organizers planted honey bee plants in the yard of the Institute.
